June 24, Solferino
On the occasion of the centenary of the battle, on June 24, 1959, French President Charles De Gaulle and Italian President Giovanni Gronchi cut together the ribbon of the inauguration of Via Dunant repeating and thus celebrating the Franco-Italian alliance that allowed Italy to self-determination.
From then on, on June 24th, Solferino is celebrating the re-enactment of the historic battle where international authorities participate together with the leadership of the International Red Cross for the events in memory of that fundamental historical moment.
Also on June 24, 2009, Solferino celebrated the 150th anniversary of the birth of the idea of the Red Cross where international and young authorities from all over the world gave birth to the largest solidarity meeting.
Our town organize to welcome the International Red Cross for a week of peace and solidarity, which ends every year with a great torch of peace that brings more than 10,000 people to Solferino.
We also have the historic costume reminiscence, between Solferino and San Martino, and many other initiatives to remember that fundamental historical moment.
